Printable Booklets for Emergent Readers
Early childhood teachers tend to spend hours of time searching for just the right books for their students for both shared reading and guided reading literacy experiences. Once a book is located, it is sometimes even more difficult to find multiple copies, books that can be sent home for further reinforcement, and/or books that can be made even more personal with student drawn artwork, etc. Below, you will find a growing collection of free printable booklets for use in your classroom or home school. The booklets are unleveled reading materials for emergent readers. They correspond to typical shared reading stories, focus on word families, single in on sight words, or contain concepts for science, math, and social studies commonly used in early childhood themes/lessons.

Word Family Booklets
These short booklets feature short vowel word families. The booklets are written in repetitive sentence format and incorporate sight words. The Stage 1 Booklets are
designed to be slightly easier for students to read and use simple initial consonants and maybe an initial blend. The Stage 2 Booklets are designed to be a little more difficult and
use mostly initial blends. Each booklet also contains a Word Family Companion worksheet that further enhances the word family study.
Additional Word Family Resources: Word Family Worksheets - another great resource for Word Family Practice from Carl's Corner! Rhyme a Week - Word Families studied within the context of nursery rhymes; lots of printables here! Word Families - information and activities for word families from the Calico Cookie Kindergarten Word Families - information and a list of the most common families; designed for parents
Pat the Cat and Friends Big Books by Colin and Jacqui Hawkins, Dorling Kindersley Limited, 1983. The Series includes Pat the Cat's Big Book (ISBN 1582091854), Jen the Hen's Big
Book, Mig the Pig's Big Book (ISBN 1582091879), Tog the Dog's Big Book, and Zug the Bug's Big Book (ISBN 1582091862).

Sight Word Booklets
These 8-10 page booklets feature sight words or 'popcorn' words that can not always be sounded out, but beginning readers need to readily know. The booklets build upon each
other, with the later booklets repeating already introduced sight words. They are loosely coordinated to correspond with themes/seasons as the school year progresses.
Several teachers have offered their talents to make the Sight Word Booklets easier to use with a wider range of students. Many thanks for their contributions and willingness to
share with other educators!

Big Book Versions and Pocket Chart Pictures
|
Translations
|
|
Martha Shehan, a Kindergarten teacher in Colorado, shares how she uses the sight word booklets weekly in her classroom. "I re-created them using the same Microsoft clip art so I can have a
teacher version "big book" in color as I do a first read with the kids each week. I also used the clip art to make pictures for the pocket chart.
I write each page (sentence by sentence) on sentence strips for the pocket chart. After the first reading, children take turns coming up and reading one sentence at a time in the pocket chart, then finding the picture to match. This is such a wonderful way to reinforce voice-print match, reading strategies (looking for the picture, re-reading and getting a running start, and getting their mouth ready by making the first sound of an unfamiliar word.) After a couple of days with this practice, I give them each their own copy - the ones from your site. This has brought such remarkable results with my readers. They are so confident - even the first month of school - using this method."
Martha has graciously agreed to share the Big Book Teacher Versions as well as the Pocket Chart Clipart.
Thank you Martha for taking the time and effort to make and share these resources!

Spanish - An ESL teacher, translator, and frequent visitor to Hubbard's Cupboard, Marina Insausti, agreed to help translate some of the printable booklets into Spanish!
French - A French teacher, Kathy Jones, has volunteered to translate some booklets into French as well. The French booklets are a work in progress, so please be patient.
A big thank you to Marina and Kathy!!!
