August's Songs and Poems

This Is the Way We Go To the Beach
(From: More Toddlers Together by Cynthia Catlin)
(Tune: 'This is the Way')

This is the way we walk on the sand, walk on the sand, walk on the sand.
This is the way we walk on the sand
when we go to the beach.

Continue with other verses...
swim in the water
jump in the waves
pick up the shells
lay on our towel
rub on sunscreen
feed the seagulls

Building Sandcastles
(From: Preschool Mailbox, June/July 2004)
(Tune: 'Row Your Boat')

Dig, dig in the sand
(Pretend to dig in the sand.)
Pile it way up high.
(Pat a pretend pile of sand.)
Build a castle; make it tall.
(Pretend to shape the sandcastle.)
Right up to the sky!
(Stack one fist on top of the other.)

Splish, splash, comes a wave
(Swing arms side to side.)
and flattens out the sand.
(Pretend to flatten the sand.)
Another castle must be built.
(Place your hands on your hips.)
And I will lend a hand!
(Raise your hand.)

Animals in the Sea
(By Jean Warren)
(Tune: 'The Farmer in the Dell')

The whales live in the sea.
The whales live in the sea.
Heigh-ho, watch them blow.
The whales live in the sea.

The crabs live in the sea.
The crabs live in the sea.
Heigh-ho, they scurry so!
The crabs live in the sea.

The octopus live in the sea.
The octopus live in the sea.
Heigh-ho, they live in holes.
The octopus live in the sea.

The sharks live in the sea.
The sharks live in the sea.
Heigh-ho, watch them go.
The sharks live in the sea.

The oysters live in the sea.
The oysters live in the sea.
Heigh-ho, they burrow below.
The oysters live in the sea.

Forest Friends
(From: More Toddlers Together by Cynthia Catlin)
(Tune: 'The Farmer in the Dell')

The squirrels run in circles.
The squirrels run in circles.
Looking for a tree to climb.
The squirrels run in circles.

The bear creeps through the trees.
The bear creeps through the trees.
Looking for some berries to eat..
The bear creeps through the trees.

The birds fly around.
The birds fly around.
Looking for their nest in trees..
The birds fly around.

The rabbit hops around.
The rabbit hops around.
Looking for home under the ground.
The rabbit hops around.

The deer sleep on the ground.
The deer sleep on the ground.
Curled up underneath the trees.
The deer sleep on the ground.

Wide Eyed Owl

There's a wide-eyed owl,
(Make circles around your eyes and open your eyes wide.)
with a pointed nose.
(Use your 2 index finger to create a V at the end of your nose.)
He has two pointed ears,
(Stick up index fingers to make ears on top of your head.)
and claws for his toes.
(Bend fingers and bring in close to your chest.)
When he sits up in his tree
(Point up high to a pretend owl in a tree.)
and  he looks down at you,
(Peer down and point down at the child.)
he'll flap his wings,
(Flap your arms.)
and say, "Whoo, Whoo, Whoo."
