What is EDK?

EDK stands for Extended Day Kindergarten. For the past three years, EDK has been designed for students who need an 'extra boost' before heading to first grade in the fall. Students attended their regular half day kindergarten classes all year round, but starting in January stayed for a full day of kindergarten-switching classes midday.

This year, we have an exciting opportunity to start EDK classes in August!  After all kindergarten students participate in a short screening, all students will be assigned to their regular half day Kindergarten classes.  Based on the screening results and professional teacher judgment, twenty four students will also be asked to participate in another half day session - Extended Day Kindergarten. In essence, your child will be attending Kindergarten for a full day, but with the benefit of having two teachers!

Each EDK class will have a maximum number of 12 students each, one full time teacher, and one full time aide so that more individualized attention and small group instruction can take place.  The EDK class is not designed to be a repeat of the regular kindergarten session.  However, review of lessons and skills taught in the regular session are stressed.  The curriculum contains a very strong emphasis on emergent literacy, phonemic awareness, and following directions.
