Start of the Year Reminders

Graphic of a smiling worm in an apple

The following information is included in the 'Start of the Year Packet' that is handed out at the start of the school year.  You may want to refer to this at various times throughout the school year. It contains information that should answer some common questions regarding your child's extended day kindergarten experiences such as the following...

Lunch
Transportation
Supplies
Clothing/Belongings
Home Support and Involvement
VIP Folders
Volunteering

Lunch Our EDK class is nicknamed 'The Lunch Bunch' because we are the only kindergarten class that gets to eat lunch at school!  Both AM and PM EDK students will eat lunch each day in our classroom.  Students may either bring their lunch or pay $1.60 per day to have a lunch from the high school cafeteria brought down for them. Students may purchase milk to accompany their lunch from home at a cost of 25 cents.  Lunch menus will be sent home each week.  Please send any money (including any milk money) in on Mondays in an envelope marked with your child's name, the amount enclosed, and the days they will need a lunch provided on the front.

Transportation AM EDK begins at 8:45am. Children should arrive between 8:30 and 8:45am.

PM EDK students attend their other kindergarten class and then join the AM EDK class for recess, lunch, and quiet time at 11:30am.  PM EDK students are dismissed for home at 3:10pm.

If you have a change in transportation (i.e. child is riding a different bus home, going to be a car rider, or will be picked up by someone other than you at dismissal) we must have a note stating this signed by the parent or guardian.  Otherwise, regular transportation arrangements will be followed.  This is for your child's safety!

Early Release Days
(Please note this change...)
When the elementary schools have an early release day, PM EDK students will dismiss at 1:50pm.  AM EDK transportation will not be effected.

Supplies The kindergarten supply fee covers most of the things your child will need for school (crayons, glue, scissors, pencils, etc.). Occasionally, we may send home a request for a specific item, but for now, these are the things your child will need...

  • 1 package of Ziploc style bags (sandwich, quart, or gallon size)
  • 1 box of Kleenex tissues

AM students:

  • 1 package of large sized paper plates
  • and 1 package of small sized paper plates

PM students:

  • 1 roll of paper towels
  • and 1 package of Styrofoam bowls

Clothing/Belongings Have your child wear seasonally appropriate play clothes.  We will have at least one recess time each day either outside or in the gross motor room.

Please remember to label all of your child's belongings (jackets, backpacks, etc.) with his/her name.

 Home Support and Involvement
  • Share a Story
Read to your child each day.  "The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children." (Becoming a Nation of Readers: The Report of the Commission on Reading)

These could be library books or the simple predictable black line books and poems that your child brings home from school! (See 'Nightly Readers' below.)

  • Nightly Readers
Each night (Monday-Thursday), your child will be expected to check out  one book from our classroom library to share at home.  Most of the books will be those that a family member will need to read aloud to them. Books are due back to our EDK class the next day.  Once a child returns a book, he/she may check out a new one!

  • Review Needed Skills
Take a few minutes each day to help reinforce skills that your child needs extra practice with whether it be cutting, coloring, letter sounds, oral counting, tying shoes, memorizing home information, etc.  A little practice at home each night goes a long way!

  • Take Home Poems, Booklets, and Retelling Charts
Be on the lookout for these anytime throughout the school year!

  • Home Literacy Kits
Your child will have the opportunity to take home a packet of books, materials, and related activities for you and your family to work on together during a one week time period. Students will be able to choose a literacy kit approximately one time per month.

  • Family Night
One evening in the Spring, we will hold our class Family Night.  Students will eagerly want to share this exciting evening of hands on learning fun with you!

VIP Folders Your child will receive a folder for very important papers (VIP). If you see this folder in your child's backpack, it means there is something important for you to look at!  Please remove these notices and have your child return the folder to school the next day.  Your child will receive either a small stamp or sticker inside their folder when it is returned.  Please help your child take good care of their folder, as it needs to last all year. Also, please check your child's backpack everyday as the folders may be sent home on any day of the week.

Volunteering We need your help!  Parents are needed to help with...
  1. all kinds of material preparation (cutting, gluing, stapling, etc.)
  2. being an overseer for  small group work and ABC Centers
  3. calling students back to do one on one skill practice
  4. donating/contributing items for classroom use (books, small objects to count and sort, art center supplies, etc.)
  5. enjoying a good book!  You could read aloud to the class. (Call ahead to make arrangements.)

More details to come...Watch your child's backpack for notices and monthly 'sign up' calendars.  I will ask volunteers to begin in late  September.  This will allow the class some time to settle in to routines, etc.
